Moshi Moshi Japan!

Say hello to futuristic cities, ancient temples, mist-shrouded mountains, lightning-fast bullet trains and kimono-clad geishas – the wonders of Japan beckon!

Let AirAsia drop you off in Tokyo, where your exploration begins! And there could not be a better starting point, as Tokyo, being the Japanese capital, will defy your imagination with its high-energy pace and sci-fi-like architecture. There’s no shortage of places to visit: trendy boutiques, art galleries and museums are easily found. But don’t let your eyes remain at street level as your scour the city for excitement – look up and let yourself by mesmerised by the many iconic buildings here, all featuring inspiring levels of sophistication. As the sun sets, it’s time to make your way to Shinjuku and Shibuya, where a fantastic night out is guaranteed. The best way to get ANYWHERE in Tokyo: the bullet train, which is in itself a true marvel of speed and innovation.

If traditional culture is your thing, you’ll want to visit cities such as Kyoto and Nara that are well-known for temples, shrines, tea ceremonies, geishas and kabuki (traditional stylised dance-drama).

A trip to Japan is incomplete if you don’t allow yourself to fall under the spell of its majestic mountains, most notably, Mount Fuji. While it may not seem like much to see Japan’s tallest mountain (it stands at 3,776m), consider the fact that it’s hardly ever visible except during the winter months, or on the rare occasion that the air is clear! Cable cars allow for spectacular views. For the more adventurous traveler, climbs are possible in July and August.

You may also want to try taking a communal hot-spring bath. Believed to cure all sorts of ailments, it will at the very least make you feel absolutely good. Pick between elegance, Zen-like affairs or rustic outdoor baths with views of the countryside. Regardless of the setup, you’re in for an experience that awakens all the senses. You first have to soap up, rinse off and then soak in near-scalding waters! Hot-spring baths are best done in Kyushu and Hokkaido.

Japanese cuisine lovers will never want to leave: you’ll be hard-pressed to find an eatery that does not serve excellent food. Whether it’s impossibly fresh sushi, perfectly battered tempura or a hearty bowl of ramen that you’re craving.

If Japan sounds too good to be true, it’s only because it really is!
